We have decided to discontinue the EJK Baltimore Bookmaking Competition. Thank you to everyone who contributed over the years! We had a wonderful time reading your stories and appreciated seeing all of your wonderful artwork. Though the competition has come to an end, I hope that your ideas and love of storytelling never does.

2017 EJK Baltimore Bookmaking Winners

We are proud to announce the winners of the second annual Baltimore Bookmaking
Competition sponsored by The Ezra Jack Keats Foundation, Enoch Pratt Free Library, The Reginald F. Lewis Museum, Jump In Studio, Inc. and Baltimore City Public Schools.  

Elementary School city-winner: VIOLINS by Emery Ancarrow & Hanaa El Fernani  Thomas Johnson #84 ES/MS 5th grade

Middle School city-wide winner: ALPHABET ANTICS by Mya Nelson-Williams & Kamaya Parker-Bey Vanguard Collegiate Middle School 8th grade

High School city-wide winner: STARS by Amy Artiga & Jeremiah Keaton  Patterson High School 12th grade

The award ceremony will be held at The Reginald F. Lewis Museum on May 24 2017, during its annual African American Children’s Book Festival. City-wide winners will receive a cash prize of $500. Winning entries will be on display at The Enoch Pratt Free Library in June 2017.

Baltimore Bookmaking Application

Our bookmaking deadline is quickly approaching! We can't wait to see what students have come up with this year. Please note, the application has been updated year. Teachers will receive a copy of the application via e-mail, but we are also attaching it here for your convenience.

Baltimore City Educator Workshop Recap

On Saturday we wrapped up our second annual Baltimore City Educator workshop with Susan Stockdale and Liz Wolf. What a treat! Susan gave us a peak into her creative process which includes free association supported by tons of research! Her upcoming title, Fantastic Flowers (March 2017) is a wonderful display of flowers masquerading as ballerinas, parrots, spoons, and more.

                      

After Susan's talk we shared a fantastic lunch provided by Classic Catering before being thoroughly wowed by our next activity. Lunch was followed by a fabulous bookmaking workshop lead by Liz Wolf. Please do contact Liz for art workshops, she is amazing!

Teachers were introduced to many new book structures and we all had a ball joining in on the fun! During the workshop, teachers learned how to make an accordian book, a concertina, and a pop up. What fun!

At the end of the day, participants were sent home with free picture books provided by Jump In Studio and The Enoch Pratt Free Library. All in all, the day was phenomenal. Many thanks to our Baltimore Bookmaking team, and The Reginald F. Lewis Museum for hosting us. We'll see you again next year!

Bookmaking Workshop Update

Dear teachers,
We are looking forward to seeing you this Saturday at our second annual Ezra Jack Keats Bookmaking Workshop. 

Please use our loading dock entrance (located in the museum parking lot) to access the building. This is off President St. You can park in the PMI Garage on Pratt St facing the museum and get your parking validated for $7.  The workshop is on the 4th floor.

2016-17 EJK Baltimore Bookmaking Competition!

Welcome back everyone! As we begin a new school year in Baltimore City, I hope that you leave some room in your schedules for bookmaking! Last year was such a big success for us and we are thrilled to launch our second competition. Stay tuned for updates.

Omar Jimenez of WBAL 11 news interviewed the elementary school winners of the EJK Baltimore Bookmaking Competition Saturday.  Liahna Rebello and Kenzi Merchant, fourth-graders at Monarch Academy in Baltimore City, shared their experience collaborating on Creepy Creatures, also present were their teacher, Ms. Erica Foote, along with parents and family.

Lewis Museum, Jump In Studio, Inc. and Baltimore City Public Schools. We have named one winner and one runner up in each division.

The award ceremony will be held at The Reginald F. Lewis Museum on May 14, 2016, during its annual African American Children’s Book Festival. City-wide winners will receive a cash prize of $500. Supervising teachers of this year’s winners and runners up will receive a gift certificate from Penguin Random House, good for the purchase of 25 books from their catalog. School-wide winning entries will be on display at The Enoch Pratt Library in May, 2016 (dates to be announced).

Extended Deadline

Happy New Year book makers! The weather outside is frightful so we have decided to extend the bookmaking competition deadline for one week. Please get your entries in no later than FEBRUARY 1st. Hopefully we will have dug out form any blizzard by then!

Educator Bookmaking Workshop

We hope everyone is excited about this year's bookmaking competition! On October 3rd, Jonathan Bean will join us at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum to discuss his work. Books will be available to purchase. Please RSVP by Sept. 25th and join us for a day of art and bookmaking!

Ezra Jack Keats Baltimore Bookmaking Competition

Welcome to the blogspot of the first annual Ezra Jack Keats BALTIMORE Bookmaking Competition! Here you will find resources, facts, and guidelines for the competition. We officially launch on August 31st. Schools, libraries, and community organizations will be notified of the competition and details regarding registration and eligibility will be announced.

With a generous grant from the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation, The Enoch Pratt Free Library, The Reginald F. Lewis Museum, and Baltimore Department of Education will launch Baltimore City's competition. We encourage all students (grades 3-12) to apply their skills of storytelling and art to bring their books to life!
